Former Continuing Care Center Site Will Be New Housing
The site of the former Lakeland Continuing Care Center, located at 3425 Lakeshore Drive and Hawthorne Avenue in St. Joseph, is getting new life as a housing project
intended for resident doctors and their families.
Lakeland’s graduate medical education program
recruits 60 resident doctors, who each spend three years
working at Lakeland facilities and living in southwest Michigan. The proposed residences would be specifically designed to meet the needs of resident doctors, with
a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units at price
points comparable to the area market.
“We saw a great opportunity to enhance our graduate medical education program by providing housing on this property we’re no longer using,” said Loren B. Hamel, MD, President and CEO, Lakeland Health. “The more we can do to attract and retain excellent physicians to our area, the better prepared we will be to continue to meet our
community’s medical needs well into the future.
Already, nine physicians who have completed residencies
at Lakeland have chosen to stay in southwest Michigan
to care for the community.”
Construction of the new housing project is taking place
in three phases, with the goal to have the first phase
completed in May 2016 to coincide with the summer’s
arrival of resident doctors.
Phase I will include:
- One four-story building with an elevator facing Lake Michigan
- A mix two and three bedrooms totaling 28 units
- Fitness center complete with a yoga space
- Clubhouse that includes a theater room
- Class/craft room for birthday parties and larger gatherings
- Children's play area
- Onsite barbecue grills
- Privacy fence
- Sales and management office onsite
